East meets West

£350.00

60 x 60 x 2 cm mixed media ( acrylic, oil pastel, ink, graphite)

Pen and acrylic ink applied in layers explore the relationship between east and west incorporating calligraphy jade green and pattern. I spent several months in Malaysia studying Chinese calligraphy with a calligraphy master and I use this technique in many of my paintings. Of course it takes many years to become fully accomplished at calligraphy and I only reached the first few stages but I found it fascinating how the angle of the brush, for instance, affects each stroke and symbol and how the script connects with nature.

I use a lot of Chinese calligraphy brushes in my artwork which gives freedom to the line and creates more dynamic details. I use artist quality acrylic ink for permanence with mixed media- acrylic pigments, paints and mediums.
