Selected for the RA Summer Exhibition 2024

Dances at Dawn (6 am overBangkok) 35 x 45 x 3 cm

I am thrilled to share that ‘Dances at Dawn (6 am over Bangkok)’ has been selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition! As one of the most prestigious exhibitions for artists, the Summer Exhibition has long been on my bucket list and I am looking forward to seeing my work hung next to some of the biggest names in the art world including RA Academicians such as Greyson Perry, Hughie O‘Donaghue and Hurvin Anderson.

I have been shortlisted before and submitted twice (2022, and 2024) but this is the first time I have had a painting selected and hung for the Summer Exhibition.
The theme this year explores ‘the idea of making space, whether giving space or taking space.’

Packing up the painting and taking it to the RA

The first of a new series of paintings, ‘Dances at Dawn‘ offers a unique yet remote perspective of the earth below, delving into the intricate tapestry of culture and lives across different parts of the world. It’s an exploration of relative histories within a single, fleeting moment.

The Summer Exhibition dates back to 1769 after King George III approved the opening of the Royal Academy the previous year.

Shortlisted and now delivered to the RA for the final round of judging

It is quite a process to enter as 16500 2D and 3D submissions are shortlisted down to 4000 with just under 1000 artworks finally selected by the judging panel of Academicians and hung in the exhibition.

Exhibitors are invited to attend the ‘Varnishing Day‘ on the 10th of June and private view with the Summer Exhibition opening to the public on the 18th of June (until the 18th August).

Varnishing Day is traditionally the day final touches are made to the artwork. Still, these days it involves a procession for the artists, accompanied by a steel band, from the Royal Academy at Burlington House, Piccadilly to St James’s Church for a blessing, followed by a reception and first look at the Exhibition. All work is for sale online and at the Royal Academy.

I’ll be reporting back! :)
